It has taken nearly a full century to happen - but, we are today, on the verge of discovering how to run our cars, vans, trucks, buses, and all manner of road and track vehicles - on Hydrogen - as a fuel supplement.!

Worldwide - we are seeing Hydrogen being used as a fuel supplement for transport vehicles; and there is even a trend towards Hydrogen - alone -  starting.

Most of the remaining issues address the fact that Hydrogen - alone - is very volatile.  Hydrogen has a well known tendency to explode if it escapes into a warm environment; one where a spark could ignite it.

So, for the time being ... vehicle makers are using gaseous Hydrogen - stored in pressurised tanks - in their vehicles.

This hydrogen does not directly provide power to the wheels of those vehicles. Instead, the Hydrogen is used to charge ‘fuel cells’ which create electricity, to drive the wheels of the vehicle, through batteries and electric motors.

But … therein, of course, lies a significant problem. The normal driver, making any type of journey; surely, and reasonably - and driving an Hydrogen vehicle - would expect to find a supply of Hydrogen wherever there was a need to fill up the Hydrogen tank on their vehicle.

This essential need dictates a key feature of this story; what has become known as ‘The Hydrogen Highway - in the fullest sense of the word - and that will cost us A VERY GREAT DEAL OF MONEY to design, develop and build it.  

We must design and build an intermediate stage in our use of Hydrogen - as a fuel for both ‘legacy’ and more modern vehicles - before we can all, eventually, return ‘Home to Hydrogen’.

We are in precisely that stage today. We call it ‘Hydrogen-on-Demand’. Your intrepid author has been driving his own vehicle converted to ‘Hydrogen-on-Demand’ for the past several years ………

The HYDROGEN Story ... affects us all in so many ways.

Many of us will be aware that water is made of 2 atoms of Hydrogen and 1 of Oxygen - and that Hydrogen is, by far, the most prolific element on our planet. Look what ‘Wikipedia’, the Internet’s encyclopaedia, has to say about water in this panel.

Without Hydrogen, life as we know it would be impossible; you could argue that, without hydrogen, we could not float in water; because - no water!.

As Hydrogen and Oxygen combine naturally, to form water, you can be sure that we would all die of thirst if there was no Hydrogen available.

All the water on the planet, in the oceans, the rivers and lakes, in the clouds and in ourselves, plants and organisms; gets there naturally; and all of water

 comprises, quite simply, Hydrogen and  Oxygen.

By simply burning Hydrogen in the presence of air; the oxygen, in the air, combines with hydrogen to make water.

Into every litre bucket of water; nature has compressed more than 1250 litres of Hydrogen and over 850 litres of Oxygen !

‘ So what ... ?’, you might say.  Well, hold on to that thought ....

Here’s the point of this story.

When the earliest motor vehicle was invented, late in the eighteenth century, in Europe, the only fuel available to run in the elementary engine on that vehicle was ... Hydrogen.

The inventor had no choice; neither gasoline, petrol, diesel nor any other hydro-carbon fuel had been invented.

There was no petroleum industry - no BIG OIL existed - no oil refining - no way to create motor fuels, had yet been discovered.

The rest of that saga is history and I’m sure you are familiar with the way the tale developed.

Now ... the story is close to turning a full circle!
